World Wide Cabernet Sauvignon & Blends

Another sold out event and it was fun.  Thank you Shari for hosting and she has agreed to host an Oregon Pinot Noir event in August.  I looked forward to Jessica hosting the Spanish Reds tasting in July.

2 Wines Under $20

2005 Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Cabernet Sauvignon $$

Color:  Dark purple

Nose: Forest floor, cherry, plum, spice, oak

Taste:  Wow!  Forest floor, cherry, plum, spice, oak, not too tannic

Finish:  Intense and powerful

Evaluation:  Best wine ever for under $10 to date.  92 points

Today's review was less favorable than the previous.  I would say it lacked the great fruits on this bottle and I sensed bottle variation.  87 points

2004 Santa Rita Medalla Real Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon $$

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Floral, plum, earth, spice,

Taste:  Huge spice and crushed rock, floral, oak, vanilla, cinnamon

Finish:  Powerful with spice, floral, oak, vanilla, and cinnamon

Evaluation:  For $16.99 at Hennepin Lake a steal!  This needs to be decanted 4 hours and is better the next day.  I would also cellar for 5 years as you will be rewarded.  89 points

Today's wine review would be similar and this wine really improved over the course of the night thanks to Gary saving some in his glass.  This has another 5 years of aging.  90 points

Big Wines

2002 Red Edge Victoria Cabernet Sauvignon $$$$

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Spice, floral, eucalypts

Taste:  Eucalyptus, spices, floral

Finish:  A little off compared to a bottle 2 years ago but featured earth tones.

Evaluation:  Drink up as I don't see this improving 88 points

2005 Concha Y Toro "Don Melchor" Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon $$$$$

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Impressive with coffee, blackberries, chocolate, minerals

Taste:  Really complex wine with black fruits, coffee, chocolate, minerals, and spice

Finish:  Really impressive and multi layered

Evaluation:  This has some serious life left and should cellar well for 15 years 93 points

2003 Chateau Lascombes Margaux $$$$

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Figs, pencil lead, spice, and oak

Taste:  Well integrated oak with pencil lead, spice, figs, and tobacco

Finish:  Well integrated tannins and this is drinking well right now

Evaluation:  Super wine still at a great price at around $50 94 points

2005 Hewitt Rutherford Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $$$$$

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Spice, blackberries, minerals

Taste:  Bitter with spice, blackberries, minerals

Finish:  Bitter and tannic this wine needs some cellaring

Evaluation:  A little generous as I think this wine will improve 92 points
