Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Spice, oak, cinnamon

Taste:  Wood, spice

Finish:  Medium and one dimensional

Evaluation:  Not recommended.  80 points

2001 Domingo Hnos. Domingo Molina

Yacochuya Malbec  $$

Color: Dark purple

Nose:  Berries, spice, oak, vanilla

Taste:  Plums, black berries, spice, oak

Finish:  Medium and intense with berries, spice, vanilla

Evaluation:  Solid wine with interesting notes.  90 points

2003 Alferedo Roca San Rafael Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon $$

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Cherry, earth

Taste:  Earthy with a little fruit

Finish:  Medium with some spice

Evaluation:  OK for a country known for Malbec 84 points

2004 Achaval-Ferrer Malbec Finca Mirador - Argentina, Mendoza (2/25/2010)
Dark purple. Very elegant nose with coffee, cranberries, boysenberries, and spices. On the palate this has come around on day 2 with coffee, boysenberries, raspberries, minerals and a vary of spices. Medium finish and balanced. On the finish a nice pepper quality is revealed. Great wine! (94 pts.)

2004 Achaval-Ferrer Malbec Finca Altamira - Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, La Consulta (3/2/2010)
Decanted 2 hours. Dark purple. Nose is amazing with floral, blueberries, perfume, and subtle spices. The palate is showing blueberries, spices, floral and earth. Medium finish and this wine is extremely balanced. This is the best South American Wine I have ever tasted! Thank you Parker Board for the $40 a bottle price!!!!! (96 pts.)

2005 Conquista Malbec $

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Floral, oak, spice

Taste:  Simple and straight forward with earth dominating

Finish:  Medium

Evaluation:  Worth the money.  84 points

2005 Conquista Mendoza Reserva Malbec $$

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Toasted oak, plum, cherry, vanilla, the fruit is intense

Taste:  Toasted oak, spice, floral, plum, and earth

Finish: Spice, floral, crushed rock, earth, vanilla, buttery finish.  This is a solid medium finish.

Evaluation:  The best Malbec I have had to date.  Extremely complex!  91 points

2005 Ben Marco Mendoza Malbec $$

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Spice, earth

Taste:  Spice, earth

Finish:  Medium with spice and earth

Evaluation:  This is why I give a wine a score.  The taste and finish are much better then the description.  A nice introduction to Malbec.  88 points

2005 Famiglia Meschini Gran Reserva Maipu, Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Heat coming off with spice, earth,

Taste:  Hot wine with spice, cherry, sweet fruits, earth, minerals

Finish:  Medium with spice dominating along with floral, and sweet fruits

Evaluation:  87 points

2005 Monteviejo (Clos de los Siete) Petite Fleur - Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, Vista Flores (2/26/2010)
Earth, floral and fruit. Nothing bad or great about this wine. $17.99 a bit too much for the quality. (87 pts.)

Spice, cherry, rapsberries, and earth on the nose. Balanced wine overall with a medium finish. (88 pts.)

2006 Achaval-Ferrer Malbec Finca Altamira - Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, La Consulta (1/30/2010)
Dark purple. Nose was amazing with floral, blackberry, coffee beans, blueberries. A chewy wine with amazing structure. The palate had an array of flavors featuring floral, blackberries, coffee beans, dust and cherries. Long concentrated finish and drinking really well right now. This is the best Malbec I have tasted to date. (95 pts.)

2006 Altocedro Old Vines Mendoza Malbec (organic) $$

Color: Dark purple

Nose:  Intense with black fruit, spice, mineral

Taste:  Big wine with a balance of fruits and earth tones

Finish:  Medium with nice black fruit, spice, and mineral components

Evaluation:  A great value Malbec that has organic fruit.  88 points

2006 Finca Sophenia Altosur Tupungato-Mendoza Malbec $

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Violets, plum,  grape jam, mineral

Taste:  Violets, earth, spice, grape jam, plum

Finish:  Medium and complex with nice qualities

Evaluation:  Incredible Value.  90 points

2006 Bodega Catena Zapata Mendoza Malbec $$

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Cherry, blackberry, spice, and mineral

Taste:  Cherry, blackberries, minerals and vanilla

Finish:  Fruit forward wine with a medium finish

Evaluation:  A great producer 89 points

2006 Conquista Malbec Reserva - Argentina, Mendoza, San Rafael (4/6/2010)
Light purple. Nose spice, cherry, oak and vanilla. On the palate spices, cherry, floral and toasted oak. Medium finish and plenty of flavor. This is one of my favorite Malbecs under $25. (90 pts.)

2006 Santa Julio Mendoza Malbec  $

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Spice, earth

Taste:  Watered down with spice

Finish:  Weak with some spice and earth

Evaluation:  80 points

2006 Henry Lagarde Single Vineyard Mendoza Malbec $$

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Subtle with spice, floral and raspberries

Taste:  Floral, crushed rock, raspberries and minerals

Finish:  Medium and balanced

Evaluation:  Really nice for under $15 89 points

2006 Bodega Norton Privada - Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo (1/30/2010)
Dark purple. Nose of floral, dust, blackberries, and spice. Nice palate and not over the top. Medium and balanced finish. A very drinkable wine from a big name in Argentina. (90 pts.)

Dark wine with spice, coffee, and blacberries on the nose. Good concentration and a good value wine. (87 pts.)

2006 Bodega Valentin Famiglia Bianchi Malbec $$

Color:  Dark purple

Nose: Smoke, blackberries

Taste:  Really dry with smoke and a little fruit

Finish:  Too tannic

Evaluation:  Not memorable 85 points

2007 Bodega Catena Zapata Mendoza Malbec $$

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Nice amomas of blackberry, spice, and mineral

Taste:  Medium intensity with fruit and earth intermixed

Finish:  Concentrated wine with soft tannins

Evaluation:  Super wine without the price tag 90 points

2007 Bodegas Escorihuela Don Miguel Gascon Mendoza Malbec $

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Plum, spice, earth

Taste:  Smooth wine with cherry, plum, earth

Finish:  Medium

Evaluation:  Solid 87 points

2007 Layer Cake Mendoza Malbec $$

Color:  Dark purple

Nose:  Floral, spice

Taste:  Nice spice, figs, honey

Finish:  Sweet for malbec with spice, figs, honey

Evaluation:  A sweet Malbec that was fun to try 88 points

2007 Famiglia Meschini Reserve Mendoza Malbec $$$

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Plum, spice

Taste:  Light with spice, plum, water, too acidic

Finish:  Short and not concentrated

Evaluation:  85 points

Note:  Improved some day 2 and 3 maybe to an 87

2007 Piattelli Malbec - Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo (4/6/2010)
Simple as malbec gets. Raspberry and watered down. Worth around $4. (80 pts.)

2007 Clos de Los Siete (Malbec Blend) $$

Color:  Medium purple

Nose:  Dark fruits, smoke, minerals, floral

Taste:  Oak, floral, smoke and blackberries

Finish:  Medium and complex wine

Evaluation:  Really nice value 89 points

2007 Clos de los Siete (Michel Rolland) Clos de Los Siete - Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco (2/26/2010)
Medium purple. Blackberries, floral, smoke and oak on the nose. Concentrated wine with blackberries, smoke, oak, vanilla and spices. Medium finish and very nice overall. (90 pts.)

2008

2008 Achaval-Ferrer Malbec - Argentina, Mendoza (4/14/2010) $$
Really nice on the nose with floral, raspberries, cranberries, and spices. On the palate very clean and smooth wine with cherry, floral, spice, and raspberries. Medium finish and soft tannins. This is a drink me now wine and a great one at that. (91 pts.)

2008 Famiglia Meschini Premium Malbec/Syrah $$

Color:  Medium

Nose:  Spice, plum, cherry, floral

Taste:  Pleasant with floral, cherry, and spice

Finish:  Medium and not too tannic

Evaluation:  A nice value wine 86 points

 

2009 Gascon Malbec - Argentina, Mendoza (4/6/2010)
Spice and blackberries on the nose and palate. Medium finish and nothing complex here. (84 pts.)
